Before Virginia officially declared war, James Madison was elected Colonel in the Orange County Militia by their Committee of Safety. Due to Madison's weak physique he never served in battle. Instead Madison served in the Virginia Conventions and then the Continental Congress. After the war was over, the new United States of America struggled to find their own government. Madison organized the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and helped to establish the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. A few years later Madison married Dolley Payne Todd on September 15, 1794. The perfect wife for the introverted Madison, Dolley was key in his journey to the White House where he was the fourth President of the United States. Madison was the only President to command troops on the field while in office.
